Critique
Salagado (2003) has proposed a stem-based definition for Epachthosaurinae based Epachthosaurus, a taxon which is usually shown as a singleton genus and species on most cladograms. Elsewhere Franco-Rosas et al. (2004) have proposed a stem-based definiton for a clade of titanosaurs involving Aeolosaurus and Gondwanatitan. Some of these, such as Epachthosaurinae and Andesauroidea, are family-group names and so can be combined only in certain ways. There has yet to be a phylogenetic analysis that joins one or more taxa with Epachthosaurus as a stable clade. For this last reason, Epachthosaurinae may be redundant and is regarded here as inactive for the time being.
