Comments

Sauropodiformes is proposed here as an appropriate taxon anchored by definition to Mussaurus patagonicus, a species now documented by a wealth of articulated material including complete skulls pertaining to juveniles and adults (Pol and Powell 2005). This material clearly shows well preserved, significant cranial adaptations linking Mussaurus more closely Sauropoda than to other basal sauropodomorphs, such as Plateosaurus. Basal sauropodomorphs may be sorted to either side of Mussaurus patagonicus, at least for taxa with well preserved cranial remains.

The taxa Plateosauridae, Plateosauria, and Prosauropoda are retained but restricted in taxonomic content to better approximate common usage in the cladistic literature. Plateosauridae is restricted to a clade of basal sauropodomorphs that includes Plateosaurus but not Massospondylus or sauropods. Plateosauria is restricted to a more inclusive clade that includes Plateosaurus and Massospondylus but not sauropods. And Prosauropoda is restricted to a more inclusive clade containing five well known genera, Plateosaurus, Massospondylus, Yunnanosaurus, Lufengosaurus and Riojasaurus but not sauropods.
