Critique
Lapparent de Broin (2002) coined a new familial taxon Elosuchidae for two species of a new genus Elosuchus (E. cherifiensis, E. felixi) and for Stolokrosuchus lapparenti (Larsson and Gado 2000), arguing that the latter taxon does not belong in the Pierosauridae. Unfortunately, the proposed diagnoses for Elosuchidae and Elosuchus do not list synapomorphies that unite the two genera (Elosuchus, Stolokrosuchus) or the two species of Elosuchus, respectively. Stolokrosuchus lapparenti, on the other hand, shows several features in the snout (anteriorly protruding ninternatial bar, smooth narial fossa, reduced premaxillary palate) that unite it with Peirosaurus torminni within the Peirosauridae, as here defined.
