Critique | Carvalho et al. (2004) coined this taxon higher level taxa, Candidodontidae and Peirosauriformes. The latter is defined on the basis of Peirosauroidea, which is defined on the basis of Itasuchidae and Peirosauridae, which are defined on the basis of Itasuchus, Malawisuchus, Peirosaurus, Uberabasaurus, Lomasuchus and Majangasuchus. Of course, the use of species as specifiers would avoid this confusing regress. Nonetheless, it is clear that this taxon is at least partially based on Itasuchus and Malawisuchus. The former is rarely considered in phylogenetic analyses, owing to its fragmentary nature. The latter was regarded by Pol (2003) as the sister taxon to Candidodoon, which Carvalho et al. place in a different familial taxon, Candidondontidae. There is little sense in creating another weakly supported taxon, especially when the relationships of the nominotypical genus Peirosaurus is poorly established. |
