Critique
Itasuchus jesuinoi consists fo a pair of dentaries from the Marilia Formation of southern Brazil (Price 1955). Authors have tentatively placed Itasuchus in several families (Goniopholiodidae, Trematochampsidae), or regarded the taxon as incertae sedis within Crocodyliformes (Gasparini et al. 1991). Carvalho et al. (2004) are the first to attempt to place it on a cladogram; only one of the characters listed to support its relationship with Malawisuchus (inflated roots) is unambiguous, and this character exhibits homoplasy. This is not a solid foundation for a phylogentic definition, the taxonomic contents of which would be difficult to ascertain.
