Dyrosaurinae is recommended here for Dyrosaurus phosphaticus and any genera more closely related to it that any other pholidosaurid. Previously, there were several family level taxa based on long-snouted forns whose relationships were not specified. Pholidosauridae is used in this compilation for a group of closely related longirostrine crocodylomorphs, of which dyrosaurines are a subgroup. Kuhn (1967) attributed first use of the family group (Dyrosauridae) to Broili in Zittel (1923), whereas the author of the paper in which the name is used is here recognized.

The active and first definition of Dyrosaurinae is stem-based and uses the nominotypical Dyrosaurus phosphaticus as an internal specifier and Sarcosuchus imperator, Pholidosaurus schaumbergensis, and Goniopholis crassidens as external specifiers. The definition allows incorporation of basal forms in a group that is in need of revision, while maintaining stability in taxonomic content by excluding species from related clades.
