Chiappe (1995) was the first to define Carinatae and did so with a node-based definition. The active definition is a first-order revision of Chiappe (1995) that uses specifiers as species.

Gauthier and de Queiroz (2001), in contrast, proposed an “apomorphy-based” definition (i.e. a stem-based definition with one internal specifier and a form qualifier [keeled sternum] marking the external boundary). They did not discuss Chiappe’s previous definition. They noted that one must “arbitrarily decide” what constitutes a ridge rather than a keel on a sternum, leaving that decision to “those describing such taxa.” This would appear to allow  more interpretation than necessary in phylogenetic taxonomy.
