This taxon is currently monotypic, limited to the single species Abelisaurus comahuensis as defined by Sereno (1998). There is little purpose to a monotypic higher taxon—even if stem-based and thus potentially more inclusive. Note that Sereno (1998:64) listed the taxon as new, unaware that Paul (1988) was first to use the subfamily (Paul 1988 is the secondary nominal author).
