Erected by Marsh (1884) to include Camptonotus, Laosaurus, Nanosaurus, and Hypsilophodon. Camptonotus dispar was later named referred o the younger genus Camptosaurus Marsh 1885 in Camptosauridae Marsh 1885. Although technically, the family Camptonotidae would have priority over Camptosauridae, even if the genus is considered a synonym of Camptosaurus, Camptosauridae has been in widespread use over the last century.
