Ortega et al. (2000:67) listed several taxa when coining the name (Notosuchus, Lybicosuchus, Sebecosuchia). Carvalho et al. (2004) recently defined the taxon based in large measure on these taxa. However, other cladistic analyses have not yielded this clade (Sereno et al. 2001, Pol 2003). The definition of Carvalho et al. (2004) would result in a large clade that has been referred to as Notosuchia Gasprini 1971, a venerable taxon by comparison. Pol (2003), in fact, refers to this clade as “Ziphosuchia/Notosuchia.” Notosuchia is the more widely recognised taxon. Ziphosuchia is here regarded as inactive.
