Critique
No definition has been proposed, and this taxon has been used variably by authors to include a range of basal saurischians, and at times has been included within Theropoda (often as a lower-level taxon within Carnosauria), Prosauropoda, and Sauropodomorpha. Colbert (1964) considered this taxon a family-level taxon within his infraorder Palaeosauria, a group within which he included a melange of phylogenetically disparate prosauropods and theropods. Walker (1964) restricted this family to Teratosaurus and Sinosaurus, which he considered carnosaurian theropods. Later, Charig et al. (1965) considered this family-level taxon redundant with Plateosauridae, and thus placed all taxa previously considered as teratosaurids within an expanded Plateosauridae.
