Comments

Attribution of the taxon to Meyer 1861 (rather than its first use in this form by Lydekker 1888) follows Doyle and Sues (1995:546). The nominotypical genus and species, Phytosaurus cylindricodon Jaeger 1828, is not included given current uncertainty as to its taxonomic status.

The active definition is a first-order revision of the initial definition (Doyle and Sues 1995) and is based on two very well known phytosaurs species. Phytosauridae is part of a node-stem triplet within Phytosauria. Benton (2004) proposed a confusing definition that is both node- and stem-based, depending on the interpretation of its meaning.
