Comments | Phytosauria and Parasuchia have both been used in the recent literature for this clade, and both initially received a node-based definition from Doyle and Sues (1995) and Sereno (1991), respectively. Here Phytosauria is regarded as having the broader historical use than Parasuchia. Attribution of Phytosauria to Meyer 1861 (rather than its first use in this form (Lydekker 1888) follows Doyle and Sues (1995:546). The active definition of Phytosauria is a second-order revision, because a stem-based, rather than a node-based, definition ensures incorporation of newly discovered basal taxa. As is always the case, users will determine if this revision is warranted. One anticipates future discoveries of phytosaurs that will help bridge the morphological gap to currently known taxa. |
