Critique
Avesuchia, originally coined by Benton (1999) and later partially defined (Benton 2004), is his replacement for crown archosaurs. Traditional use of Archosauria included a few basal stem taxa with an antorbital fenestra that lie outside the node joining extant Crocodylia and Neornithes. Benton (2004:8) prefered a form-qualified definition of Archosauria (although the one he presented was not a complete definition) using the antorbital fenestra, a character that is lost many times within the group. This usage is so close in taxonomic content to a slightly more restricted crown clade definition for the well known taxon Archosaruia (Gauthier 1986) that many have adopted the latter usage, including the present taxonomic compilation.
