Critique
Paul (2002:25) erected a new taxon Avepoda for theropods with “a foot in which metatarsal I did not contact the distal tarsals.” The clade that he cited as an internal specifier (Neotheropoda), however, is a senior synonym of the clade that he is proposing (Paul 2002:24); the specifier of a stem-based clade must be internal to the clade being defined. There seems little justification for substituting a new taxon with a form-qualified stem-based definition for a taxon already defined and in current use.
