Comments | Coined by Mook (1934), this taxon has been used variously:
(1) to unite Spehnosuchidae and Protosuchidae as a basal grade of crocodylomorphs (Steel 1973)
(2) as a redundant higher taxon for Protosuchidae (= Notochampsidae; Romer 1956, Busbey and Gow 1984)
(3) abandoned altogether in favor of Protosuchidae (Clark 1994).
There is clearly a fairly diverse clade of small-bodied crocodilians most closely related to Protosuchus richardsoni in nearly all cladistic analyses. The active definition seeks to identify that calde and is a textual variant of that proposed by Sereno et al. (2001). |
