This taxon was first used by Wilson and Upchurch (2003:156). They credited authorship of both the taxon and its definition to Upchurch et al. (2004), a chapter in The Dinosauria that was in press at that time. Like Wilson and Upchurch (2003), Upchurch et al. (2004:311) defined Lithostrotia as a node-based taxon but used genera, as opposed to the species used by Wilson and Upchurch (2003). Thus, the two definitions are technically distinct, and so authorship of the taxon and first definition must be attributed to Wilson and Upchurch (2003).

There are now several singleton stem taxa at the base of Titanosauria (especially when defined as a catch-all stem-based taxon as in this compilation) and little sign of a diverse basal stem clade. There is therefore utility in coining a less inclusive node-based taxon like Lithostrotia to partition Titanosauria. The active phylogenetic definition is a textual variant of the definition in Wilson and Upchurch (2003).
