Critique
The type specimen of Thecodontosaurus antiquus is a dentary (now destroyed). The neotype is another partial dentary (Benton et al. 2000), and a skeleton referred to the same genus is extremely immature (Kermack 1984), rendering its position at the base of Prosauropoda (or Sauropodomorpha) dubious (Benton 2000; Yate, 2003). No definition exists for the family, which may have only a single species in any case. Galton (1990:335) includes the Moroccan species Azhendohsaurus laaroussi with Thecodontosaurus antiquus, although not based on any cladistic information. The material of Azhendohsaurus may pertain to a basal archosauriform (as did the “prosauropod” material reported recently from Madagascar; Flynn et al. 1999).
