Comments | Protoceratopsidae was initially used to inclde all basal neoceratopsians of small body size. It became clear, however, that these forms comprise a series of sister taxa to the large-bodied Ceratopsidae (Sereno 1986) when considered in a phylogenetic analysis. When so partitioned, there has been some cladistic support for a more restricted Asian clade that includes several Protoceratops andrewsi (Sereno 1986, 1999b). This more restricted monophyletic Protoceratopsidae was defined by Sereno (1998). The active definition is a first-order revision of this initial definition. Thus far, no other definitions have been proposed. |
