This taxon was used by Colbert (1964:20) for the major groups of prosauropods that he believed were herbivorous. It had largely fallen from use until Sereno (1998:63) defined the taxon to include Massospondylus, Plateosaurus and other closely related taxa within a monophyletic Prosauropoda, the node of a node-stem triplet used to subdivide prosauropods. This usage was followed recently by Yates and Kitching (2003). Galton and Upchurch (2004), however, used this name to refer to a more inclusive clade, although they did not cite the earlier definition or present their reasoning.

The active definition is a first-order revision of that in Sereno (1998). Saltasaurus is included as a negative taxon qualifier, so that Palteosauria will not be used if Massospondylus and Plateosaurus are not more closely related to each other than to sauropods, as some have argued (e.g. Yates 2003).
