Comments | Currie and Padian (1997) and Padian et al. (1997) were first to define Oviraptorosauria. They chose a stem-based definition realizing that doing so might circumscribe taxa not normally included within Oviraptorosauria such as therizinosaurs. To avoid this possibility, Padian et al. (1999) switched to a less inclusive node-based definition. Later workers have not followed this revision. They returned to the earlier stem-based definition (Maryanska et al. 2002) or simply included newly discovered basal forms (Caudipteryx, Incisivosaurus) while excluding therizinosauroids (e.g. Xu et al. 2002). The active definition of Oviraptorosauria is a first-order revision of the original stem-based definition that uses multiple external specifiers to stabilize taxonomic content. Recourse to a node-based definition to maintain stability of taxonomic content is unnecessary and counterproductive. A new stem-based taxon Oviraptoriformes Sereno 2005 has been introduced to include clades that lie just outside Oviraptorosauria. If there are no such clades, then Oviraptoriformes overlaps in definitional type and content with Oviraptorosauria, which would have priority. It should be noted that when Ornithomimosauria, Oviraptorosauria, and Deinocheirosauria were first coined by Barsbold (1976), he appended “Barsbold 1974” to the new taxa. His bibliography, however, did not include any publication of this date naming these taxa. Later (Barsbold 1983) corrected the date of these taxa to his 1976 publication. |
