This family was formally recognized by Barsbold (1976b), who argued for a subdivision of the family Oviraptoridae into two subfamilies (Oviraptorinae, Ingeniinae).  His other paper in that year (Barsbold 1976a) cited Barsbold (1976b) as the original source for the family-group taxa, Oviraptoridae and Oviraptorinae (also the nominal author for Oviraptoroidea).  Several publications do not differentiate between these family-group taxa named by Barsbold (1976b) and Oviraptorosauria named by (Barsbold 1976a), listing only the latter citation as author for both (e.g. Clark et al. 1999, 2001, Lü 2002).  Osmólska et al. (2004:tab. 8.1) doubtless were aware of the difference in the original auhorship of these taxa, but inverted their citation (there are many incorrect citations of nominal authors with more than one publication in the same year in Weishampel et al. 2004).

Oviraptoridae was first defined by Sereno (1998) as a stem-based taxon. Unaware of Sues’ (1997) synonomy of the genus  Caenagnathus with Chirostenotes, Sereno (1998) used the genus Caenagnathus. Padian et al. (1999) followed Sereno in the structure of the definition but used Chirostenotes. It is not clear why Maryanska et al. (2002) also used Caenagnathus, as they cited Sues’ paper and did not dispute the synonomy. The active definition is a first-order revision of that in Sereno (1998) that uses species as specifiers and Chirostenotes pergracilis as the external specifier.
