Ornithothhoraces was first used as a label on a cladogram in a figure by Chiappe and Calvo (1994:fig. 9). Chiappe and Calvo (1994), thus, are properly credited with the name. Padian (2004:tab. 11.1), however, incorreclty cited Chiappe (1995) as author of the taxon. Later Chiappe (1996:205) explained that Ornithopectae, the previous taxon he had coined for the same clade, should be dropped because Ornithopectae was “grammatically incorrect.” There was no further explanation. Chiappe (1996) then proposed a definition that is a textual variant of the first definition for the taxon, which appeared earlier in a figure legend (Chiappe 1995:fig. 1). Padian et al. (1999:75) proposed a definition for Ornithothoraces, but this definition is a textual variant of that in Chiappe (1995), which was not cited. Sereno (1998) used the better known Sinornis as an internal specifier, which was followed by Senter at al. (2004:19).

The active definition is a first-order revision of Sereno (1998), using Sinornis santensis as a specifier within Enantiornithes because of its completeness and nested position (Sereno et al. 2002). Iberomesornis romerali, by comparison, is based on a single partial postcranial skeleton that has been subject to alternative osteological interpretations(Sereno 2000, Sanz et al. 2002) from those in its original description (Bonaparte et al. 1988).

Potential Synonomy
Ornithotharaces (Forster et al. 1996, spelling error), Ornithopectae
