Critique | Ornithomimoidea was first used by Zhao (1983:296). It was subsequently used and defined by Sereno (1999a, b) as a node-based clade composed of ornithomimids and alvarezsaurids (Sereno was unaware at the time of Zhao’s previous usage). Sereno’s use of the superfamily was predicated on using the family-level taxon Ornithomimidae to include all taxa that had been referred to Ornithomimosauria—a tradition that has largely been abandoned. In this database, Ornithomimosauria is used in this capacity, and so it no longer makes sense to use a superfamily at a more inclusive level. The taxon is available for later use within Ornithomimosauria. Ornithomimiformes Sereno 2005 (see Ornithomimiformes) has been coined to encompass Ornithomimosauria and any other clades that are allied as sister taxa. |
