Comments | Bakker (1986) coined the taxon; Sereno (1998) coined the first phylogenetic definition. The active definition is a first-order revision of the original definition that replaces Neornithes with Passer domesticus. Padian et al. (1999) suggested Ceratosaurus as as a specifier, presumably because of its eponymous relationship with the included taxon Certaosauria. With the recent discovery of more complete abelisaurid specimens, the original contents of Ceratosuria has been split (Carrano et al. 2002, Wilson et al. 2003). Using Coelophysis now identifies a different clade than Ceratosaurus. Deeply nested taxa, such as Coelophysis are preferable for this very reason. Additionally, the taxon is the node of a node-stem triplet, linked to gether by complementary definitions that use the same set of specifiers. Wilson et al. (2003) cited the species Coelophysis bauri. |
