Comments | Neornithischia was coined by Cooper (1985) and defined by Sereno (1998) as a stem-based taxon and party to a node-stem triplet that also includes Thyreophora and Genasauria. Thus Thyreohpora comprises armored ornithischians and Neornithischia the remainder (ornithopods and marginocephalians). To ensure the inclusion of ornithopods within Neornithischia as a prerequisite for its use, a nested ornithopod (Parasaurolophus walkeri) has been added as a positive taxon qualifier. Neornithischia (Cooper 1985) and Cerapoda (Sereno 1986) were coined independently and included much of the same taxonomic content. Sereno (1997) adopted and defined (Sereno 1998) Neornithischia (Sereno 1998) as it was the earlier of the two taxa coined. Cerapoda, in contrast, was defined only recently by reapplying the definition used originally for Neornithischia (Weishampel 2004). Cerapoda is regarded here as a junior synonym of Neornithischia. |
