Critique | This taxon is not regarded as active, given recent work on basal theropod relationships. The taxon was coined but not defined by Novas (1992). Holtz (1994) proposed a node-based definition based on Ceratosaurus and Abelisauridae. Padian et al. (1999), without comment on Holtz’s prior node-based definition, coined a stem-based definition using Ceratosaurus and Coelophysis as internal and external specifiers, respectively. Tykoski and Rowe (2004) cite Padian et al.’s (1999) definition but attribute it to (Holtz 1994), who used a very different definition. Similar to Sereno’s Ceratosauroidea, Neoceratosauria no longer applies to a subset with Ceratosauria that also includes Coelophysoidea—if one accepts new phylogenetic arrangements (Carrano et al. 2002, Wilson et al. 2003). Rather it would include most ceratosaurs (sensu stricto) except possibly Elaphrosaurus. the utility of the taxon, thus, is compromised. |
