Critique
This taxon was originally erected by Huxley (1869), and subsequently used by researchers (e.g. Steel 1970) to include an assemblage of phylogenetically disparate large-bodied theropods. Steel (1970) included Allosaurus (Antrodemus of his usage), Ceratosaurus, Dryptosaurus, Eustreptospondylus, Indosaurus, Majungasaurus, Megalosaurus, and several other genera in this family-level taxa. Today, we know these genera to belong to a variety of phylogenetically disparate higher-level taxa (e.g. Allosauroidea, Ceratosauroidea, Spinosauroidea, Abelisauroidea).
