Maniraptoriformes is adopted in this compilation as a more inclusive clade with a node-based definition that includes ornithomimids but excludes all more distantly related coelurosaurians, following Holtz (1996), Padian (1997) and Sereno (1998). First coined in two adjacent abstracts (Holtz 1995; Holtz and Padian 1995) and first defined by Holtz (1996), the active definition is a first-order revision that uses species as specifiers. The correct citation for authorship of the taxon is Holtz (1995) (not Holtz 1996, contra Sereno 1998, Padian et al. 1999, Osmˇlska et al. 2004). Maniraptoriformes contains most coelurosaurs, allowing the stem-based taxon Coelurosauria to include others that may constitute immediate outgroups, such as Ornitholestes and possibly Tyrannosauroidea.

The definition by Maryanska et al. (2002) used Ornithomimus velox as a specifier rather than Ornithomimus edmontonicus, as the former is the type species of the genus. However, the higher taxa in which it belongs (e.g. Ornithomimosauria) are based etymologically on the genus, not the species. O. edmontonicus is much better known and is the taxon represented in most analyses. The recent definition by Senter et al. (2004), the clade bracketed by Ornithomimus and birds, is not a complete phylogenetic definition.
