Critique | Maryanska et al. (2004) first defined this taxon, which in their analysis includes Homalocephale, Ornatotholus, Stygimoloch, Stegoceras, Tylocephale, Prenocephale, and Pachycephalosaurus. This clade differs from their Goyocephala only by the exclusion of Goyocephale. They erroneously attributed the taxon to Sereno 1986, who was first to use the superfamily but not the first to name the family group, which was coined by Dong (1978). Futhermore, Maryanska et al. (2004) placed within this superfamily the family Pachycephalosauridae, which is incorrect. Pachycephalosauroidea Sternberg 1945 would have precedence, even though the superfamily had not been previously used. There seems little reason at this point to interject another nominotypical family at the base of Pachycephalosauria, when nearly all of the speices are singleton taxa on available cladgrams. If there is a need for a further subdivision, Pachycephalosauroidea is available. |
