Comments | Hadrosauriformes was coined by Sereno (1997) and defined as a node-based taxon including iguanodontids and hadrosaurids (Sereno 1998). The active definition is a first-order revision of this definition. Sereno (1986) had used Iguanodontoidea (Hay 1902) in this capacity, considering the taxon a Hyperfamily in his ranked classification—one that included a subordinate superfamily (Hadrosauroidea). Later Sereno (1997) coined Hadrosauriformes as a replacement name for Iguanodontoidea to avoid having one taxon with a superfamilial ending (-oidea) inside another. Norman (2002) proposed a definition for Iguanodontoidea. This taxon, so defined, constitutes a junior synonym for Hadrosauriformes, which was defined several years prior (Sereno 1998) and used on most cladograms of advanced ornithopods. |
