The active definition is a first-order revision of the first definition for the taxon by Novas (1992). There is little reason to use the more poorly known dinosaur precursor Lagerpeton (Benton 2004), the relationships of which ar less certain (Sereno and Arcucci 1993, 1994). Marasuchus lilloensis is the preferred specifier, rather than Lagosuchus talampayensis (Sereno and Arcucci 1994).
