Sereno (1998) first defined Carcharodontosauridae as one of three stem-based families within Allosauroidea. The active definition is a first-order revision using species as specifiers. To exclude species within the two other allosauroid subclades, two external specifiers are included (Sinraptor dongi, Carcharodontosaurus saharicus), leaving other species to fall where they will. To eliminate the possibility that coelurosaurians would be included (in the event that Carcharodontosaurus is closer to Coelurosauria than to other allosauroids), one additional external specifier is included (Passer domesticus).

This taxon was originally coined by Stromer (1931), and has since been used by most authors (Sereno et al. 1996, Harris 1998, Holtz 2000, Rauhut 2003) to encompass Carcharodontosaurus, Giganotosaurus, and Acrocanthosaurus. However, others have argued that Acrocanthosaurus is closer to Allosaurus (Currie and Carpenter 2000, Coria and Currie 2002). Recently, some have suggested that Neovenator is also a member of the Carcharodontosauridae (Rauhut 2003, Holtz et al. 2004).

The species Carcharodontosaurus saharicus was coined originally by Depéret and Savornin (1927), a paper sometimes cited with the year 1928 (e.g. Chure and McIntosh 1989).
