Critique | Padian et al. (1999:77) coined the taxon Eusaurischia as a node-based taxon uniting "Theropoda + Sauropodomorpha" principally because Saurischia—with the same taxxonomic content—was accepted as stem-based. The utility of erecting taxa that, to the best of one's interpretation differ only in definitional type and not in taxonomic content, is of dubious utility. Be that as it may, Padian et al. (1999) did not provide a phylogenetic definition. More recently, Langer (2004) provided a node-based definition for Eusaruischia, using the sauropod Cetiosaurus and as specifiers. His in tention was to name a clade that differed in content from Saurischia by the exclusion of certain basal taxa, namely herrerasaurids and Eoraptor. This hypothesis, however, is poorly supported, differing by as little as one additional step from a hypothesis uniting all as Saurischia (Langer 2004, Langer and Benton in press). Should there continue to be a desire to define a node-based Eusaurischia for the arrangement of basal saurischians envisioned by Langer (2004), it would be better to use Passer domesticus and Triceratops horridus as specifiers, and specifically exclude Eoraptor lunensis and Herrerasauus ischigualastensis by adding a taxon qualifier ( . . . "but excluding Eoraptor lunensis and Herrerasauus ischigualastensis"). Defined this way, Eusaurischia would be restricted to clades that differ from Saurischia in this significant manner. The current compilation, however, regards a stem-based Saurischia as sufficient for current knowledge of basal relations among dinosaurs and considers Eusaurischia inactive. |
