Comments
Padian (1997:617) named and defined Pterosauromorpha as “Pterosauria and all ornithodiran archosaurs closer to them than to dinosaurs.” This is a useful stem-based taxon that provides a catch-all for taxa believed to be immediate outgroups for pterosaurs without forcing new and unusual forms into Pterosauria. The active definition is a first-order revision that uses species as specifiers. The venerable and well known species Pterodactylus antiquus (Sommerring 1812) serves as an internal specifier to anchor the definition. Similarly Passer domesticus is included as an external specifier that will work effectively to control unwanted inclusion of ther taxa (when pterosaurs are regarded as archosaurs).
