Critique | Coined by Upchurch (1995) and defined by Upchurch (1998) and Salgado (2003), Titanosauroidea overlaps with either Somphospondyli or Titanosauria (depending on the position of Euhelopus) as these latter taxa were defined by Wilson and Sereno (1998) and Sereno (1998). This taxon has not gained currency over Titanosauria. Attempting to prevent such overlap, Salgado (2003) redefined Titanosauroidea as a slightly less inclusive taxon that excludes Andesaurus. As Wilson and Upchurch (2003) argue, however, the type species of the genus Titanosaurus is invalid, and all family group names basd on the nominotypical genus Titanosaurus should be abandoned (including Titanosaurinae, Titanosauridae, Titanosauroidea). |
