Critique

Romer  (1956) coined Titanosaurinae for what have been widely regarded as “titanosaurids”—equivalent to Titanosauria in the context of this compilation.  Romer placed Titanosaurinae and Diplodocinae, two groups now considered only distantly related, in Titanosauridae.

As Wilson and Upchurch (2003) argue, however, the type species of the genus Titanosaurus is invalid, and all family group names basd on the nominotypical genus Titanosaurus should be abandoned (including Titanosaurinae, Titanosauridae, Titanosauroidea).
