Comments | Nodosaurinae was initially defined by Sereno (1998) as a stem-based taxon using genera as specifiers, with Panoplosaurus as an internal specifier and Sarcolestes and Hylaeosaurus as external specifiers. The active definition is a first-order revision. It includes the less completely known Nodosaurus textilis as an additional internal specifier to ensure inclusion of the nominotypical species and cites three well known basal species as external specifiers (Polacanthus foxii, Hylaeosaurus armatus, Mymoorapelta maysi). The authorship of the genus and species of Polacanthus foxii The early ankylosaur Sarcolestes leedsi, based on a lower jaw from the Middle Jurassic (Callovian) of England, is no longer used as an external specifier, given the limited information available concerning its morphology. Synapomorphies visible on the specimen, however, support its referral to a basal position within Nodosauridae (and thus the early split between Nodosauridae and Ankylosauridae) rather than a more general assignment to Ankylosauria incertae sedis (Maryanska et al. 2004). |
