Critique
Marsh (1873) erected Ichthyornithes for Ichthyornis and Apatornis, which upon review and cladistic analysis do not appear to be closest relatives (Clarke 2004). Clarke (2004:20) defined Ichthyornithes as a stem-based clade that currently includes only one genus and species, Ichthyornis dispar. She attempted a definition because of other poorly preserved material from Europe and Asia that might someday be shown to be related. When that day arrives, the taxon can be resuccitated. Until then, it must be considered a junior synonym of Ichthyornis.
