Comments
The active definition is a first-order revision of the first definition in Sereno (1998), using species as specifiers. Following Padian et al. (1999), Dromaeosaurus albertensis is used as an internal specifier rather than Velociraptor mongoliensis to ensure inclusion of the eponymous genus. Velociraptor mongoliensis is better known but not appreciably more nested within the clade than Dromaeosaurus albertensis. The only coelurosaurs that have been placed by quantitative analysis as sister taxon to dromaeosaurids besides troodontids are ornithomimosaurs and birds. Nested specifiers from these two clades are cited as additional external specifiers to maintain the content of Dromaeosauridae under alternative phylogenetic arrangements.
